The Brewton Area YMCA was established in 1988 as a non-facility YMCA and quickly began serving the community in the areas of wellness, childcare, and youth sports. The community quickly got behind the YMCA and locally raised a little over $3 million dollars to build our current facility. Our facility doors were opened in October of 1990 and consisted of a wellness center, aerobics studio, indoor pool, indoor walking track, and gymnasium. Since then, we have expanded to a licensed pre-school (60 2–5-year-olds), another gymnasium, and expanded our wellness center. With a service area of roughly 10,000 people, we boast a membership of approximately 3,500 in our 70,000 sq. ft. facility that sits on 150 acres.
We work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. The Brewton Area YMCA is at the very heart of the community, providing services to many, which includes scholarship opportunities for those in need. We are a member of the Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce as well as the United Fund of Brewton/East Brewton.

Current Program Areas of Emphasis are:
The Brewton Area YMCA is in essence the recreation department for the City of Brewton, as we offer soccer, basketball, flag football, volleyball, tee-ball, coach pitch baseball, Cal Ripken baseball, Babe Ruth softball and baseball, as well as numerous camps throughout the year. We are currently in the process of completing a regulation Babe Ruth field on our campus to go along our 4-field sports complex. We have a regulation soccer field on campus as well where we conduct our flag football and soccer programs.
As previously mentioned, we have a pre-school on site that is licensed for 60 children. We have 4 classrooms with 2 teachers in each. Our hours of operation are 7:15-6:00 daily. In addition, we offer after-school childcare and summer camp. With both of these programs, we collaborate with the Brewton City School system in providing the recreational component for their 21st Century Learning Center program at our facility.
Our wellness center boasts over 3,000 square feet of cardio and strength training equipment, both selectorized and free weights. In addition, we have our ‘Pit’ downstairs (600 sq. ft) designed primarily for our ‘heavy lifters’. To go along with that, we have converted one of our racquetball courts into what we call our ‘EFT’ (Extreme Fitness Training) room, equipped with peg board climber, warrior ropes, plyo boxes, tire flip, kettlebells, etc. Our fitness classes include: Les Mills Body Pump, Hot Yoga, Indoor cycling, Pilates, Fit and Firm, and Body, Rock and Tone, just to name a few. We just recently went to 24/7 operation with limited access to the facility any time day or night.
Our 6-lane, 25-yard indoor pool serves a broad range of ages, from swim lessons and water acclimation classes for toddlers, to water exercise classes for our Active adults. We are also home to the Brewton Local Area Swim Team (BLAST) and home of the T.R. Miller High School swim teams, where the boys are the 3-time defending state champions.
Staff and Volunteers
Staffing includes 3 full-time exempt, 8 full-time non-exempt and approximately 40 part-time staff. This includes 3 directors and 5 members of the senior leadership team. The volunteer Board is comprised of 20 members and the board meets on a quarterly basis. The Executive Committee is comprised of 9 members and meets quarterly as well or as needed.
