Job Description

National Charter Collaborative (NCC) is a nonprofit organization focused on increasing the diversity and performance of the nation’s charter school sector by supporting the success of single-site schools led by leaders of color who represent an estimated 16% of all charter schools serving over 250,000 students across the country. NCC’s network includes 450 charter school leaders of color representing 25 states and the District of Columbia.

NCC invites nominations and applications for the position of inaugural Chief Executive Officer (CEO). NCC seeks an exceptional leader who is deeply committed to providing an equitable high-quality education to all students, particularly Black, Brown, and Indigenous students. This is a compelling opportunity for a strategic, innovative, and entrepreneurial leader who wants to grow a start-up organization.

Charter school leaders of color face unique challenges that have impeded their collective capacity to create high-performing schools, resulting in the highest risk of closure in the sector. NCC strives to create a flourishing ecosystem of single-site charter schools led by leaders of color by ensuring that these leaders have the resources and support required to build quality schools.

The inaugural CEO will assume leadership as movements call for Black liberation across the country. The global pandemic heightens the urgency of these movements and illuminates inequities that Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities face, especially in education. The CEO will lead NCC in being a prominent voice in support of single-site charter schools and their leaders of color, in an effort to create more high-quality education experiences for Black, Brown, and Indigenous students throughout the nation.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO will supervise a staff of three, overseeing a budget of $1.9 million, and support projects under three program areas: member network management, the Manati fellowship program, and advocacy. The position calls for a strategic, results-based, creative, visionary leader who is a spokesperson for charter schools and equitable education. Strengths in fundraising, advocacy, and partnership development, particularly in the education space, are critical to this role. This individual should have a deep understanding of charter school issues, policy, and research as well as experience leading communications campaigns and organizing efforts.

An ideal candidate for the CEO position at NCC will bring many of the following professional experiences and personal attributes:

 A record of leadership and effective management within an organization. Experience managing growth and change.

 Demonstrated fundraising background. Ideally, significant experience raising funds from a variety of sources, especially philanthropic organizations funding education and impact work in Black, Brown and Indigenous communities.

 Proven business acumen, including discipline and focus in setting priorities and meeting or exceeding goals.

 Strengths in developing a collaborative work environment reflective of the core values of an organization focused on the liberation and self-determination of Black, Brown, and Indigenous people.

 Strengths in recruiting, developing, mentoring, motivating, and retaining talented and high-potential staff.

 A record of success with public speaking and serving as the external and internal face of an organization. A keen sense of marketing. Experience with media, including social media, is advantageous.

 Track record of building and participating in successful cross-sector partnerships.

 Ability to grow and maintain strong relationships with a volunteer board as well as with peer organizations and community stakeholders.

 Demonstrated commitment to and experience in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through project and staff management.

 An outgoing, open personality. Authenticity and approachability. The ability to connect with people at all levels, across cultures and communities.

 Entrepreneurial spirit and drive.

 High emotional intelligence, including an ability to express gratitude and humility.

 Ability to empower others by listening deeply and building strong relationships.

 Adept at conflict management and calm in a crisis.

 Unimpeachable integrity and personal ethics exhibited through consistent action.

 Advanced degree in education, public administration, policy, business administration, or related field is preferred.

 At least ten years of relevant work experience.
