Job Description

Western Illinois University (WIU or Western) invites applications and nominations for the position of president. The president provides leadership for all activities of the university and is accountable for its overall operation and success.

WIU is a regional, comprehensive university that serves approximately 8,000 students at its residential, four-year campus in Macomb, Il, and at its non-residential branch campus in Moline, Il. WIU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, North Central Association and has been recognized by the Princeton Review as a top-tier Midwest Universities Master’s institution. The University offers 65 undergraduate programs, 38 masters/specialist degrees, two doctoral programs, five pre-professional programs, and 15 post-baccalaureate certificate programs. Seventy eight percent of WIU students are undergraduates and 22 percent are graduate students.


The president will be responsible for developing a vision for the university that includes open, transparent, and inclusive strategies for response to contemporary challenges facing WIU within the framework of evolving national trends in higher education. The president is responsible for leading the institution, implementing all polices of the Board of Trustees, keeping the Board of Trustees and the Illinois Board of Higher Education informed about matters pertinent to the university, and maintaining the fiduciary, policy, and personnel functions of the university. The president oversees and is responsible for administrative functions, student life, athletics, fundraising, and all academic functions of the university. The president works in close consultation with all internal and numerous external constituencies to provide leadership, support, and direction for the university. The next president will be a campus-wide leader who is able to mobilize campus constituents toward the common goal of providing access to excellence. The president will be a strategic thinker as well as a champion of all campus community members. The president’s role is to sustain and promote the campus as a leader in the marketplace of ideas, discoveries, and technologies, both locally and globally.

The ideal candidate will have the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics:

 Earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution with scholarship sufficient for tenure as a full professor in an academic department of the university;

 Demonstrated record of successive university leadership;

 Track record of successful leadership through institutional challenges;

 Experience in developing and implementing both short-term and long-term strategic planning;

 Experience working with internal and external constituent groups;

 The ability to be an excellent spokesperson for the university;

 Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion as core values that enhance the educational process and further, demonstrated commitment to ongoing diversification of faculty, staff, and the student body;

 A track record of innovative funding initiatives and success managing complex budgets in an academic setting;

 Knowledge of current issues and trends in higher education; and

 Ability to formulate and communicate a clear institutional vision; and

 Ability to communicate and facilitate change.
